What is a startup incubation cell?

A startup incubation cell is a structured programme, usually run by a university, company or government body, that supports early-stage founders through mentorship, workspace, networking and hands-on guidance. Its job is to help a raw idea survive the early stages, when most startups fail, by giving founders the resources and expertise they wouldn’t have access to on their own.

How does CMR University support student startups?

Through the C-Nest, CMR University gives a dedicated workspace to student founders at the Lakeside Campus, structured mentorship across four incubation phases, access to fabrication tools like 3D printers, masterclasses in pitching, finance, marketing and connections to industry mentors, alumni founders and investors. Support continues from the earliest idea validation stage through to company registration and acceleration.

Can any student join the Incubation Cell, or only specific schools?

The C-Nest doesn’t restrict entry to a particular school. Students submit a startup idea for evaluation and selected teams move forward regardless of which programme they are enrolled into. With that said, the first category is focused on IT domain startups, so students with a technology angle to their idea may find this initial phase especially relevant, with other sectors expected to open up as the ecosystem expands.

What is the difference between the Incubation Cell and the Design Thinking Lab?

The Design Thinking Lab is where the process starts. It’s a mandatory course for every CMR University student, teaching them to identify real-world problems and shape user-centred solutions. The C-Nest picks up from there. It’s where a validated idea becomes an actual business, with the mentorship, infrastructure and funding route required to build, prototype and eventually launch a company. In short, the Design Thinking Lab teaches you to think like a founder and the C-Nest helps you become one.
