Advancing knowledge, empowering society, and building India’s innovation ecosystem

CMR University, through its Directorate of Research and Innovation, is fostering a dynamic ecosystem of interdisciplinary research, publications, patents, and flagship projects that drive societal impact and strengthen India’s innovation landscape.

Research and innovation are fundamental to academic excellence and societal transformation. At CMR University, these pillars are driving a culture of inquiry, creativity, and collaboration that spans disciplines and sectors. Through the Directorate of Research and Innovation (DoRI), we have established ourselves as a dynamic hub for impactful research, consistently pushing the boundaries of knowledge while addressing real-world challenges.

Fostering a culture of research and invention

The Directorate of Research and Innovation plays a central role in nurturing and supporting research across the university. Our faculty and students are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary, applied research that is socially relevant and globally competitive. We begin teaching students academic research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are encouraging UG students to publish more papers and convert their research into products. Research is given a great deal of importance at CMRU.

Our research ecosystem is built on the collaborative efforts of three key entities: the Institution Innovation Council (IIC), the Directorate of Research and Innovation (DoRI), and the Startup & Incubation Centre.

Recent publications: Advancing knowledge across disciplines

CMRU’s faculty and researchers have contributed extensively to reputed national and international journals, conferences, and academic books. Their work reflects both theoretical depth and practical impact. We insist on Scopus indexing. IEEE publications are common among our faculty. In the past year alone, over 30 papers were published, and more than 250 have been indexed in Scopus so far.

Research proposals at CMRU are evaluated on parameters such as novelty and innovation, feasibility and societal relevance, adaptability across regions, budget for real-world application, and rigorous validation. Recent research areas include artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, healthcare technologies and medical imaging, smart manufacturing systems, and sustainable development and renewable energy. By publishing in indexed journals and presenting at global conferences, we are enhancing our academic reputation, attracting collaborations, and fostering a culture of academic excellence.

Patents: Protecting and commercialising innovation

A defining feature of our research culture is the emphasis on intellectual property creation. CMRU actively supports patent filings that showcase novelty and real-world application. These patents span IoT devices and smart sensors, biomedical instruments and diagnostic tools, software applications and AI algorithms, and advanced manufacturing processes.

Faculty are incentivised for publishing in Q1 journals, and the same is true for patents. Patents not only protect innovation but also open pathways to commercialisation, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships.

Flagship projects: Solving for the future

CMRU undertakes strategic research projects aligned with national and global priorities, funded by government agencies and industry partners. Our flagship initiatives include artificial intelligence and data science; predictive maintenance, smart city development, and healthcare diagnostics; renewable energy and sustainability; solar energy harvesting, storage systems, and waste-to-energy conversion; biomedical engineering; low-cost diagnostic devices and rehabilitation tools for accessible healthcare; and industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, including robotics, IoT, and automation for modern production systems.

These projects not only advance technology but also address critical societal challenges, contributing to national missions like Make in India, Digital India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat. We are integrating the Indian Knowledge System into research and also collaborating with international universities. As foreign universities enter India, the competition will push us to innovate better.

Building a future-ready research ecosystem

CMRU continues to invest in state-of-the-art laboratories and research centres, grant writing and patent filing support, industry-academic collaborations and incubation facilities, and conferences, seminars, and workshops for knowledge exchange. Our forward-looking research strategy positions CMRU as a key contributor to India’s innovation ecosystem, focused on delivering local solutions with global relevance. By nurturing talent, encouraging entrepreneurship, and investing in infrastructure, we are solving for the future, one project, one paper, and one patent at a time.
