The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It offers student volunteers from senior secondary schools, technical institutions, and universities the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society through structured community service.
The guiding principle of NSS is “Education through Service”, with the core objective of fostering personality development and character building among young people through active civic engagement.
Launched in 1969 with 40,000 volunteers across 37 universities, the NSS has grown into a nationwide movement encompassing over 657 universities, 20,669 colleges and technical institutions, and nearly 12,000 senior secondary schools. More than 7.4 crore students have participated in NSS since its inception.
Wearing the NSS badge signifies a student’s pride and responsibility in serving the nation. The badge design incorporates:
The Konark Wheel with 8 bars, symbolising 24 hours of the day and the constant readiness of NSS volunteers to serve.
Red represents the energy and enthusiasm of youth.
Blue reflects the vastness of the universe, underscoring NSS’s vision to contribute to the welfare of all humanity.

This motto reflects the spirit of selfless service and empathy that guides every NSS activity.
Becoming an NSS volunteer allows students to grow as socially responsible individuals. The exposure and experiences gained help them evolve into:
These week-long camps bring together 200 student volunteers from across the country to engage in service-based activities. The goal is to foster a sense of unity, cultural appreciation, and national pride.
Objectives:
Organised annually in regions such as the Himalayas and North-East India, this initiative introduces 1,500 volunteers (at least 50% girls) to activities such as trekking, rafting, para-sailing, and skiing.

Held in Delhi every January, this camp selects 200 top-performing NSS volunteers for a month-long programme culminating in their participation in the Republic Day Parade at Rajpath.

Organised every year from 12–16 January in collaboration with state governments, this festival brings together 1,500 NSS volunteers for dialogue, performance, and inspiration.

Instituted in 1993–94, these awards by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognise exemplary contributions by volunteers, programme officers, NSS units, and universities.
