B. Des | Bachelor of Design

Programme Overview

  • Everyday objects and systems around us are designed. They have either been designed by individuals or have evolved over a period of time.
  • The CMR University School of Design follows the Maker-centered pedagogy of learning. We believe our graduates to be maker-enabled designers going beyond the conventional definitions by being thinkers, makers and doers.
  • The pedagogy is an integrated process of directed, experiential, hands-on, reflective and independent learning. The school stresses on transdisciplinary learning and systems thinking, focusing on creative problem solving and instils self-motivation to learn.
  • The four-year B-Des. programme will take students through the nuances of understanding materials, processes, aesthetics, technologies, culture, traditional and indigenous knowledge systems and contextual attributes to design and realize objects, systems, services and experiences with a bias towards addressing issues of inclusivity, sustainability and climate change.
  • The B-Des program starts with an intensive one-year foundation programme where students understand the fundamentals of design which will have a balance of skill building, basic design, humanities, technology and contextual studies. Most important will be the imbibing of necessary values as an individual and designer who is part of a larger natural system.
  • At the end of the foundation year, works of the students are thoroughly analyzed by the faculty and the students will be guided to pursue major and minor courses based on their strengths, interests and abilities. The students can select their majors from the second year onwards in Industrial Design, Visual communication, Human Centered Design and so on.
  • The School of Design will be part of the one-week mid-semester workshop titled ‘FullScale’ along with the other schools of CMR University. This workshop will enhance and promote peer learning, application of classroom and studio learnings on field and interdisciplinary working.
  • The school lays emphasis on bringing maximum industry/ practice driven projects into every studio right from the foundation year. This will expose and keep the students in constant contact with the practice and assure them gainful and meaningful employment on graduation.
  • The B-Des. programme at CMRU will encourage students throughout to build in an entrepreneurial mentality by involving them in fairs, group projects, crowd-funded events and funded projects from both private and public entities.
