B. Arch. | Bachelor of Architecture

Programme Overview

Offered by: School of Architecture

Architecture is both a discipline and profession. It plays a key role in shaping the built environment. Through the use of technology, architecture enables the creation of functional spaces that provide for people’s needs. The B.Arch. Program will impart knowledge and skills required to design built environments required for human habitation.

Architecture is referred to as the mother of all arts. It is a form of spatial art (that shapes spaces). However, technology related to structures, lighting, acoustics, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply and sanitation will have to be integrated into spatial design. By the same token, the visualized spaces must satisfy the physical and psychological needs of people.

An architect shapes the built environment of a town, city or a village by designing buildings or groups of buildings. The practice may employ assistants including architects, engineers, and supervisors and provide consultancy services in terms of design and execution.

Following an undergraduate education in architecture, one may choose to specialize in landscape architecture, interior design, conservation, urban design, Industrial Design, Visual Communication, service design etc. Such specialists offer consultancy to generalists including architects. Teaching and research are other avenues open to architects. Architects also work in related fields like computer applications, real estate, construction management, digital architecture etc.
