Master Class Series - An initiative by CMRU, School of Architecture

The Master Class series is an initiative by CMRU SOA to introduce students to established and emerging professionals in architecture and allied design fields. Invited speakers present their works and engage students in discussions about questioning the current practices and trends in design fields.

Anthropologist, Prof. Dr. Jan Brouwer, shared his experience in helping businesses and companies in a globalising economy. Prof. Dr. Jan Brouwer began the Master Class Series in September with his talk on “Anthropology in Architecture”. The research projects he has been associated within India, and over his long tryst with anthropology encompass the width of structural anthropology and include the mentality component of culture, indigenous knowledge, the relationship between concept and practices and death as a social relation.

Industrial designer Shyam Narayan engaged students in an interactive discussion on design trends and concepts. Mr. Narayan spoke about design for the Indian context and social impact, startup mentoring, farming & non dualism.

Architects Nagraj Vastarey, Shantanu Garg, Prof. Anirban, and Prof. Rajagopalan Palamadai spoke of architectural works and concepts across the world which provoke questions around the confluence of cross over design , ideation through drawing and the business of architecture.

Ar Nagraj Vastarey focused on a conversation around design ideation and the translation of the “parts” from the recesses of the mind into the “whole”. The presentation by Shantanu Garg invited a discussion on taking Indian design sensibilities globally and fusing international design trends in India. Prof. Rajagopalan Palamadai’s talk ‘Good Design is Good Business’ explored case studies of projects across the USA and India.

Ar. Utsav Mathur, Founder and CEO at GMetri, spoke of immersive experiences and how building the metaverse requires great design thought to work in tandem with emerging technology.
